Finding that the efforts of its lawyer and its Government
Representative were unavailing, the Company then sought and
enlisted the aid and assistance of Lic. Rosendo Pineda, ona
of the first lawyers of the country and possessing great
influence with the Executive Government, and after working on
the case for about ten days or mora in trying to procure the
Government's consent to the proposals of the Co as previously
made, and after interviewing the Minister of the Interior
several times, and after holding out hopes of success in his
endeavours, he finally reported failure. He suggested one last
resource, which was that of diplomatic intervention. Then ---
learning of the great influence that Senators Carvajal and
Castellot had with the Minister of Interior, and being
recommended to them, their assistance was onlisted on the Co's

June 16th, and the following day Mr. Leung Kam Ming called on th
British Minister and laid the case before him.
On June 6th, the Co., desirous to learn the exact
condition of the passengers, engaged two independent Mexican
doctors from the city of Mexico, viz., Drs Buyot and
Vallarrino, and sent them to Salina Cruz to examine and report
on the condition of the men on board the "Suisang" in the
company of MR. R. P. Camden, General Agent of the Co. on the
9th they certified as folbows, -
"On this date we have examined on board the s. s. Suisang
"anchored in the bay of Salina Cruz, 412 individuals of
"Chinese nationality with the following results.- 127 of
"said individuals we foung with diverse ocular sufferings
*among which trachoma may be encountered, while of the
*285 we found to be free of all signs of trachoma.
